Hana al-Shalabi, Palestinian hunger striker
Palestine News Network - Hanah Shalabi, 29 years old, from the West Bank village of Buqrin near Jenin was arrested by the Israeli authorities from her family house on 14th September 2009 around 1:30 a.m.
According to Addameer profile: Israeli soldiers in 12 military jeeps surrounded her house in Burqin village, near the West Bank town of Jenin, ordered Hana’s entire family outside of the house and demanded Hana to give them her identity card. Then they thorough searched the house of the family. During the search, one of the soldiers forcibly removed the framed pictures of Hana’s brother Samer, who was killed by the Israeli army in 2005, tore them apart and walked over the pieces in front of the entire family.
Shalabi was sentenced to administrative detention (in which the prisoner is to be detained without charges or trials) and served two and half years without charges. During her interrogations, Shalabi was subjected to solitary confinement, abuse and sexual harassment.
In Shalit’s swap deal in October 2011, Shalabi was among 1,027 Palestinian prisoners who were released. On 16 February 2012 she was rearrested and ordered to be detained under administrative detention without trial for another six months.
Since then the administrative detainee started her hunger strike completing what Khader Adnan has started. Today, 27th February, she entered her eleventh day of hunger strike and her parents continued their own hunger strike in solidarity against their daughter’s imprisonment without charge or trial by Israel.
The institutions of the West Bank condemn the Israeli occupation authority practices and procedures against Palestinians, and called on the world to take an immediate action to release Hana al-Shalabi as well as other administrative detainees in the Israeli prisons.
